What memories do these images bring back?

  1. These tunnels have quite a few memories. In general I avoided them, but there was always the attraction, temptation of having a nosy, whenever there was heavy rain or flooding. The tunnels were where some had their first smoke. It was were some had fights. Were boys and girls met, as meeting at each other's home wasn't really an option. For me, it was the place where I spent a few afternoons, just yarning with friends. The worst thing that happened to me there, was I remember being rejected after asking someone out! Many, many moons ago now, and water under the bridge. I remember dropping my brother off at that tunnel, and picking him up from it, so that he could meet with the girlfriend who would eventually become the love of his life. That's about it really. I still think of those things whenever I see these pics, or whenever I drive past them on trips home to New Zealand. Hope this helps, Keta.

  2. Ok Delete this if you want but I remember going to Papatoetoe High School walking to and from school using this route - One Saturday I took this route to go see a mate out in Papatoetoe around lunchtime and there were some Guys drinking in the Tunnels I could hear them Laughing and Joking, I didnt look as they were much older then me and were obviously drunk. They yelled out "Shh Hey!!" as I got further away from the tunnel. I knew if I glanced back they would become threatened and would take it as a challenge. I just kept walking as they made more comments I could hear a metal object scraping across the ground as they laughed.
I'd check the tunnel everytime from then on to make sure the coast was clear.
I also remember a large island man chasing down this tall skinny dude and catching him just at the top of the tunnel then he beat him heavily with a plank of wood..I was about 8 years old and at that age it scarred the hell out of me. I just kept walking home hoping he wouldnt see me..

  3. I too would try and avoid walking on this side of the road going to and from school as it always had students from other schools looking at you as if they were going to jump you or something? On the other hand I do remember the tunnels over flowing with water when it was a rainy day. When a bunch of us were together we would jump in and have the best time ever and then we'll go home and make out we were wet from walking home in the rain. Once upon a time I remember going up the hill wearing rollerskates, then I'll turn around to try and come down. I never ever got that far and went the long way home...that's about it but if I remember anything else I'll let you know...hope that helps in anyway...
